Western Region Hosts UBBI In Roswell

The UBBI produced an All Region Qualifier in Roswell, New Mexico on July 26th and 27th at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds.  The event was hosted by Marc Andrus who produces the bull riding as a memorial for his son Jesse Andrus and his friend Mike Hillman.  Jesse and Mike were tragically killed in an accident while rodeoing in April of 2010.  The first Jesse Andrus & Mike Hillman Memorial Bull Riding was held that summer in July of 2010.  Proceeds from the event have been awarded to High School Rodeo athletes in the form of scholarships each year.  Almost $40,000 in college assistance has been presented to area High School students since the start of the event.

“This is a great event and we are especially excited to be a part of it,” stated Randy Schmutz, the general manager of the UBBI.  “Marc has hosted a Don Gay Bull Riding event there for the past 3 years and decided to try to have a UBBI to give the members in that Region an opportunity to qualify for the UBBI National Finals!”

This year’s event attracted 26 Derby, 12 Classic and 29 Futurity entries for a total of 67 bulls.  Members from 5 different states and 3 different Regions participated.

“It was a really tough event,” Marc Andrus shared.  “We had some really great bulls and we were excited about the number of entries in our first year!  We plan to have another UBBI in 2014!”

The derby had 26 entries and paid 5 places.  Flyin D’s bull #X18 You Freakin Kiddin Me posted a score of 90.75 points to take first place and $2,242.  Second was bull #022 Recovery Time from Barker Bulls (Larry Barker) from New Mexico with a score of 90 points.  In third place was bull #X6 Knockem Out from Foster’s Buck’n & Truck’n from New Mexico who scored 89.5 points. Barker/Ohl/Leschyshyn/Tuttle’s bull #063 Hangover finished 4th and Joe Wimberely and Mike Sellers split 5th place with their bulls Fightin Joe Hooker and One in the Chamber both with scores of 87.75 points each.

The Futurity attracted 29 bulls and Andrus/Barker/Foster capitalized on the opportunity having an event in their home state by winning first and fifth place.  Bull #118 Big Pimpin was first with a score of 88.5 points and won $1957.  Bull #41 I Gotta Woody finished 5th with a score of 86 points.  In second place was bull #193 Shakedown from Symons Bucking Bulls/Misenhimer from Colorado with a score of 87.75 points.  Stoney Hariman from West Texas placed 3rd with bull #121 Kufus with a score of 86.75 points and in fourth was Hebert/Elite Bucking Bulls/Barker Bulls’ #W-35 Get Plowed with a score of 86.5 points.

Event though there were only 12 bulls in the Classic the event was extremely tough.  Bull #95 Here We Go from Stoney Hariman finished 1st with a score of 89 points and earned $2070.  Bryan Smith from Kansas was second with bull #96 Neon Ocean with a score of 88 points.

Marc Andrus and the UBBI would like to thank everyone who participated and encourage others from the Region to put the event on your calendar for next year!
