It’s 9 months until the 2012 UBBI National Finals, but several breeders have put themselves into contention after the first event of the season.  Nutty Jerry’s in Winnie hosted the event on January 27th and 28th with 179 two, three and four year old bulls from 123 different breeders and 6 different states.  Participants from North Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico arrived in Southeast Texas to start the new year.  Thirty-seven bulls were entered into the competition by 29 new UBBI members.

“It’s really exciting to see this organization grow and attract new members and see the return of folks from last year,” stated Randy Schmutz, general manager of the UBBI.  “In 2011 our first event was in Winnie and we had 113 bulls.  To see an increase of 66 bulls at our first event of the 2012 season is phenomenal!  The competition was as tough as I’ve seen and it’s early in the season.  This year is gonna be really exciting!”

Lufkin Ranch & Rodeo’s “Verdict” begins his season as the winner of the first UBBI Derby, putting up a score of 88 points and winning $3,059.  Verdict had an outstanding Futurity year in 2011 and it looks like it’s going to carry over into his three year old campaign as well.

In second place was, Skydini owned by Bob & Jeri Adams/Cathy Jennings/The Jaynes Gang, scoring 87.5 points and earning a check for $2,254.  Square Head, last year’s UBBI Futurity Super Series Champion, split third, fourth and fifth place with Tio Rojo of TD Cattle and Solid Gold from Wilson/King.  All scored 87 points and earned checks of $1,341.  There were 56 Derby bulls in the competition and the event paid 14 places.

Chris Mounce, owner of Rockin’ M Cattle Company is a new UBBI member and is already enjoying success in the futurity competition.  Chris entered two bulls at the first UBBI Futurity of the season and finished 1st and 2nd place.  #042 Rollin’ Smoke put up a whopping 88.75 point score to win the event and following him in second place was his traveling buddy, #037 Betta Be Movin’ with a score of 87.5 points.  Both checks totaled $4,763.

Finishing 3rd was Curtis Leschyshyn/9A Ranch Bucking Bulls # 760 Gonna Get Ya with 87 points and a check for $1,190.  In fourth place was #X18 More Big Bucks from Bar 3D Bucking Bulls scoring 86.5 points and earning $985.  There were 73 bulls entered into the competition and the event paid 18 places!

Norris Dalton’s “Shine Time” was right on time for 1st place honors at the first UBBI Classic of the 2012 season posting a score of 90.25 points and picking up $2,875 in cash.  Dalton’s superstar had to outshine Daniel & Barbare’s Black Betty and did so by 1.25 points.  Black Betty finished as the Reserve Champion and earned $2,156.  Jerry Tuttle and the Jaynes Gang brought the 2010 ABBI Futurity Champion to town and left Nutty Jerry’s with 3rd place and $1,581.  There were 50 Classic bulls and the competition was extremely tough.

The next UBBI event is schedule for February 24th and 25th in Mineral Wells, Texas at the Bar B Arena.
