This year’s UBBI regular season ended in Palestine, Texas on August 22nd and 23rd. And from the number of bulls that participated, the season ended on a “high note”! There were 67 Derby bulls, 33 Classic bulls and 56 Futurity bulls. Along with the regular season event, the UBBI hosted the Youth Futurity Series Finale (see related story) and the Rhinestone Renegades Women’s Futurity Series Finale (see related story). There were a total of 213 bulls competing in the two day event.

“The final event in Palestine was unbelievable! It was a great wrap up for our regular season,” stated Randy Schmutz, general manager of the UBBI. “Our entries were up across the board at most of our regular season events and our last event was no exception. And the competition was as tough as I’ve seen all year!”

Because of the large number of entries in the Derby, 51 bulls were bucked on Friday night and the remaining 16 bulls were bucked on Saturday night just before the Classic event. On Friday, bull #161 Moe Bandy from Dennis & Jan Owens & Bandy Mataska posted a score of 90.25 points that would prove itself hard to beat. At the end of the first performance it was bull #571 Backspin from Mutt Neuman in second place with a score of 90 points; Bull CH126 Cowtown Rocks from Carpenter/VonGontard was 3rd and bull #626 Hard Time from the Moss Brothers was in fourth place.

The Derby paid 13 places and on Saturday night at the completion of the event, bull #114 Midnight Bender from John McDonald would move into 10th place and bull #1030 Moon Lay Madness from McConnell’s Bucking Cattle would move into a split for 12th/13th/14th. The top 4 from Friday night would remain the same and Moe Bandy would pick up a check for $3852 and the Tres Rios Silver Championship buckle for the win!

The UBBI Open Futurity followed the Women’s and the Youth Futurity on Saturday morning and with 56 entries the Futurity would pay 11 places. Diamond S Bucking Bulls came to town with 4 Futurity entries and 2 of the 4 picked up checks including the win with bull #203 with a score of 89.25 points. The win came with a check for $2,598 and a Tres Rios Silver Championship buckle. Finishing 2nd was bull #Z26 Acting Crazy owned by Rocking R Bucking Bulls with a score of 88.75 points. In third place was bull #412T from Dennis & Jan Owens and finishing out the Top 4 was bull #1201 High Cost of Living from Rafter 3S & Donaho. Others finishing in the money in the Futurity were Oakes & Green; Owens & Folds; 4K Bulls; Cord McCoy/Wayne & Nancy Decker.

The Classic event attracted 33 entries and some new participants to our final competition. Bull #906 from Frontier & Ray has been the “little bull that could” all season, placing along the way. But in Palestine this muscled up 1400 pounder proved he could play with the big boys by winning the event with a score of 89.5 points and a check for $2,656. That money moved #906 to third in the year-end standings to within $3,671 of the number one bull #055 Bad Tatoo owned by

Bull #0628 Blu Grass from K bar C/Josie McElroy/Spark-Lin Acres won 3rd place with an 88.25 point score. And bull #040 Skid Row landed in the number 6 spot for a paycheck, with a score of 87.5 points.

“It was really great to see the number of entries at our final event of the regular season,” explained Schmutz. “And to see some new bulls come here and be successful was really good for us. Our growth this year has been humbling for us and we really appreciate our members and how they’ve made our organization what it is today!”
