Lights Out Turns It On In Mineral Wells

#945 Lights Out from Frontier & Ray/Folds/Strickland

When in the dark you turn the lights on and that’s exactly what #945 Lights Out did on Friday night in Mineral Wells.  The superstar derby bull from Frontier & Ray/Folds/Strickland left no doubt who was the best 3 year old at the Bar B Arena UBBI Futurity-Derby-Classic.  Lights Out beat his closest competitor by 1.75 points and collected $3,737 in UBBI winnings for his new owners.

“Dale Folds and I decided to partner on the bull and purchased an interest in him at the Frontier Sale this past fall,” explained Keith Strickland.  “It’s nice when you can bring one to town and leave with a check!”

Finishing in second on Friday night was #2W Duck Butter from Todd Bausch/Travis Alldredge with a score of 88.75 points and winning $2,709.  Rounding out the top 3 was #956 Chunky Monkey from McConnell’s Bucking Bulls with a score of 88.5 points and a check for $1,962.  Chunky Monkey made the trip all the way from Missouri.  There were 65 three year olds in the Derby competition.

The event continued on Saturday morning with 81 two year olds in the Futurity and Tom & Tish Peterson’s #20 Top Apollo took flight for the win with a score of 87.75 points and a check for $3,280.  Top Apollo was purchased by Rodney Qualls at the Ladies of the Legends Female Sale produced by Herrington Cattle Company in 2010.

“I bought the cow / calf pair at the sale in Bossier City two years ago,” stated Rodney Qualls.  “I was really interested in the pair because the bull calf was sired by Apollo and out of a Blueberry Wine daughter.  I was confident you couldn’t go wrong with those genetics!”

Qualls sold the bull calf to Tom & Tish Peterson shortly after weaning the bull and kept the female.  She has a bull calf sired by Bushwacker on her side this year!

Finishing in second and third place in the Futurity were #109 from Sellers/Nixon and #03 Weston Nights from Stoney Hariman with scores of 86.75 and 86.5 winning $2,369 and $1,503.

The big boys showed up in the Classic on Saturday night, but no one outshined Shine Time, picking up his second win in a row, scoring 90.5 points and earning $3,501.  Reserve Champion in the Classic was #841 Super Cool Cat from Jackson/Holmes/Baker with 89.5 points and a check for $2,834 and in third place was Ace of Spades/Beach City/Diedrich’s #880 White Lie with a score of 88.75 points and earning $1,834.

The Don Gay Bull Riding Tour provided 108 bull riders for the competition.  McKennon Wimberly won the Friday night two go-round contest by riding two bulls for 170.25 points and winning $1,463.  On Saturday, the one go-round contest was won by Brennon Eldred with a score of 87.5 points earning him a check for $1,260.

Billy and Angela Blue put on a great show and rolled out the “red dirt carpet” with a free Barbeque dinner, Calcutta and a remodeled facility that was enjoyed by all!
