The 2013 UBBI season is officially underway and the first event of the year attracted some new members and familiar faces.
The big winner of the weekend was the McCoy family. Denny and his son Cord and their partner, Tim Dougherty all enjoyed success and placed with bulls in the Futurity, Derby and Classic events and earned a combined $5,391. Bull #TC014 Spear My Gear owned by McCoy Ranches & Tim Dougherty placed 2nd in the Derby with 87.25 points. Bull #94 Wedding Bells owned by Cord McCoy & Tim Dougherty placed 4th in the Classic with 86 points and Bull #107 Come On Baby owned by Cord and Tim won the Futurity with 88 points.Chris Mounce continued his winning ways with #037 Betta Be Movin by placing 1st in the Derby on Friday night against 29 other bulls. His score of 88.5 points earned $2,310. Bull #039 Super Wasp from Ronnie Chism from Mississippi finished 3rd and the Scoggins family from the Rocking S, who are new UBBI members, won a 4th place check with their bull #990. Frontier & Ray found themselves in the 5th place position with Bull #906 and finishing out the top 6 money-earning Derby bulls was bull #09 Stuck On Stupid from Flying D/Bob & Jeri Adams.
The Futurity on Saturday morning had 43 entries and three new members found themselves in the money. Cord McCoy & Tim Doughtery accepted the Tres Rios Silver Championship buckle and a check for $2,322. Brickyard Bulls #563 finished runner-up with 87.25 points. Shallow Creek Farms (Gary Chism), new members from New Albany, Mississippi brought #102 Hey Jack and placed 3rd in the futurity. Frontier/Ray/Folds/Strickland placed 4th with #567 Lester Gillis. Another new member, Courmier Cattle Company (Kent Courmier) from Little Rock, Arkansas picked up the 5th place check with bull #171 Boudin Man. Frontier & Ray’s bull #255 was 7th and new members, Rockin CK (Clint Greer & Tim Murphy) finished 8th with bull #1943 Warren Fred Highway.
In the Classic competition #96 Neon Ocean, owned by Bryan Smith from Kansas, literally parted the waters and won 1st place by a 1.5 point margin over 2nd place bull #JL 02 Patrick from James & Linda Hogue/J&L Ranch. Blood Line Bucking Bulls/Rohman Performance Stock, Cord McCoy & Tim Dougherty, Frontier & Ray, Mark Swearingen and Jeff Harris all cashed checks in the Classic.
Jerry Nelson, co-owner of the United Bucking Bulls, Inc said, “We’re really excited to get the new UBBI season started. We’ve got some new and exciting things that are gonna happen this year with the Gold Standard Futurity and the Black Gold Derby that’s gonna put some more money in the breeder’s pockets. The new rank bull rider scoring system that we just started in the Don Gay Bull Riding Tour is gonna be good for the riders and the breeders. This year is gonna be fun!”
