Don Gay’s Bull Riding Tour Off to “GREAT” Start in Winnie & Amarillo

Stephenville, Texas (January 25, 2011) – The 2011 Don Gay Bull Riding Tour is now officially kicked off and showing a “great” start.  After events in Winnie and Amarillo a total of $20,812 has already been paid out to bull riders this season.  The season started in Winnie on January 11th and 12th at the “new” Nutty Jerry’s, owned by Jerry Nelson.  The event was held in conjunction with the United Bucking Bulls, Inc (UBBI) and 39 bull riders competed on Friday night finding Cody Graves from Eastland, Texas on top.  Graves posted 87 points on Chad Cliburn’s bull #8, “Cart Man Hou”.  Graves earned a 1st place check for $938.  Veteran bull rider, Ronnie Kitchens was runner-up on Mike Rawson’s bull #8, with a score of 86.25 points, winning a check for $737.  The Don Gay “Rank Bull” rider bonus went to Ben Tannehill for getting on the winning Derby bull #1226, owned by Lynn Rice/Mike Lane.  Although Tannehill did not make the whistle he earned $250.

Saturday night 40 bull riders competed and we found Lane Ware from Houston, Texas the cowboy to beat, with a score of 87.5 points on Frontier Rodeo’s re-ride bull #17.  That ride earned Ware a check for $982.  The reserve champion bull rider on Saturday was Cole Mewbern of Canton, Texas.  Mewbern scored 87 points and earned $771.  Lufkin Ranch & Rodeo’s bull, Black Widow won the UBBI Classic competition and the Don Gay “Rank Bull” rider bonus went to Cody Graves for getting on the winning Classic bull.  Graves was unable to make a qualified 8 second ride, but still earned the $250 bonus.

Amarillo Battle of the Bulls

Sixty-nine 3 and 4 year old bulls arrived in Amarillo to fight it out to see who was best at this year’s Battle of the Bulls.  This was the second stop on the 2011 UBBI schedule and also featured an outstanding group of bull riders as a part of the Don Gay Bull Riding Tour 2011.

On Friday night in Amarillo, Rowdy Allen traveled 575 miles from Livingston, Texas to the Panhandle and made every second count.  He rode Gary Hatchett’s bull #84 “All Jacked Up” for a score of 84 points and $1514 dollars later he was number one!  Colby Kyle of Perryton, Texas only had to travel 120 miles to pick up his second place check for riding Lyndal Hurst’s bull #38 Skat Man.  Kyle earned $1136.  Bermuda Triangle, owned by Lyndal Hurst, was the highest marked 3 year old on Friday night and Donny Gee earned the Don Gay “Rank Bull” rider bonus with his attempt to ride the winning Derby bull.  Gee earned $250.

Saturday night found the 4 year old bulls roll into the Amarillo National Center and hometown cowboy, Stacy Pipes was number one on Shane Smith’s bull d05, “Dos”.  Pipes scored 83.5 points and earned $1495.  Logan Helton from Pampa, Texas was second on Lonnie Austin’s #768 “Brand New” with 83 points and $1121.  Bill Clymer’s bull, “Santiago” was #1 in the Classic and John Seawright’s attempt to ride the rankest bull on Saturday failed, but earned him the Don Gay Bull Riding Tour “Rank Bull” rider bonus and $250.
