The UBBI Black Gold Derby celebrated it’s 4th year in 2014 and once again some of the best 3 year old bulls in the industry gathered to see who would leave with the first place check of $20,000.  In addition to the Black Gold Derby, the event schedule also included the Double Down Futurity and Team competition again and added the Rhinestone Renegades Women’s UBBI Futurity event this year.

“The Black Gold Derby is a revolutionary concept allowing members to obtain a Lifetime or Lottery position in order to compete each year.  That created value!”, explained Randy Schmutz, general manager of the UBBI.  “By expanding the event to include the Double Down Futurity and Team competition we’ve increased that value and added more fun and excitement to the event this year and for year’s to come! We were very excited to add the Women’s Futurity this year as well.”

The UBBI Double Down Futurity allowed Black Gold Derby participants to “double down” by entering a futurity bull and paying another $1350 entry fee and a $300 Team entry fee. The Team competition was an added value, teaming a Derby and Futurity bull together and paying back 100% the $300 Team entry fees.  This year’s Team competition attracted 40 Derby/Futurity Teams and paid back $12,000 to the top 6 teams.

The weekend’s activities started on Thursday evening with a Breeder’s Reception and complimentary dinner

followed by the 2014 Black Gold Derby Lottery and Presentation of the Futurity & Derby bulls.

“This year we had a number of Lifetime positions become available,” explained Randy Schmutz.  “We decided to once again auction 2 of them and use those proceeds to help fund the awards for the UBBI Youth Futurity Finale. We placed the other Lifetime positions in the Lottery drawing and the first Lottery applicants drawn received a Lifetime spot.”

Tyson Barnes with Smokin B Land & Cattle purchased a Lifetime position and new member Betty Finnell also purchased a Lifetime position, both for $1000 raising $2000 for the Youth Finale awards.

Friday morning the Futurity competition got underway and 15 Rhinestone Renegades tied the knot in their flanks to determine which of the women would earn money at Locust Grove, Oklahoma.  Michelle Cash was given the opportunity to use Ricky Carpenter’s bull #262 Jailhouse Jr and placed first in the 1D bracket with a score of 86.5 points and earned $1012.  Sharon Carpenter who flanked B-B Bucking Bulls’ #2007, won second place in the 1D and picked up a check for $675. The Women’s Futurity competition is paid off as a 3D competition and the 2nd and 3rd D’s are determined by dropping 3 points from the #1 bull score for the 2D winners and another 3 points from that position to determine the 3D winners.

Placing 1st place in the 2D was Kansas teenager, Martha Kay Sanders who flanked bull #23 Shonuff and scoring 83.5 points, picked up the check for $607. Finishing 2nd in the 2D was a new Rhinestone Renegade member, Betty Finnell from Elk City, Oklahoma. Her bull #213 Freckles scored 83.5 points and won $405. Eligible bulls must have entered and competed as a two year old bull in a Rhinestone Renegades event.
