UBBI Presents 2011 Top Hand Award

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Jimmy Ray with 2011 Top Hand Award recipients, Jan & Dennis Owens

Jimmy Ray & Randy Schmutz with 2011 Top Hand Award recipients, Carol & Wayne Hodges

The United Bucking Bulls, Inc celebrated it’s 2011 season with an awards banquet at this year’s UBBI National Finals.  Among the many awards was the 2011 UBBI Top Hand Award. This award has been created to recognize an individual or UBBI associate, breeder or supporter each year who participates, shows good sportsmanship, encourages others to participate, unselfishly helps others by hauling bulls while competing against one another, helps at the events and overall engages in the promotion and well being of the UBBI.  This year, two Top Hand awards were presented.

The first presentation was to Dennis & Jan Owens from Fittstown, Oklahoma.  Dennis and Jan hauled and participated with several of their own bulls, attended almost all of the UBBI Southern Region events and entered bulls in Salina, Kansas and Wheaton, Missouri.  They helped other breeders by hauling and flanking their bulls and enrolled several bulls into the UBBI Futurity Super Series.  Along the way they won the Futurity in Winnie (February) with #1463 Peace Out, were the reserve champion with #1467 Square Head at the Spring Spectacular, won the Futurity in Winnie (June) with #1324 Born This Way and won the UBBI Futurity Super Series High Point Championship with #1467 Square Head.  That title also earned them one year’s use of a new aluminum trailer from Wayne Hodges 4 Star Trailers.

The second Top Hand Award went to Wayne Hodges, owner of Wayne Hodges 4 Star Trailers in Weatherford, Texas.  Wayne has annually earned recognition in the livestock trailer manufacturing industry as a national leader in sales and new innovations.  He became involved in the bucking bull breeding industry as a fan and a small breeder 5 years ago.  After purchasing his first set of females he became involved as a sponsor through looksWEST Productions at the Spring Spectacular and Breeders Cup events held annually in Stephenville, Texas.  Shortly after that he became the official trailer of the Spring Spectacular and awarded one year’s use of a new aluminum trailer to the Spring Spectacular Futurity Champion.  Wayne designed and created the “Bull Tough” trailer now being manufactured by 4 Star Trailers with double side walls and other features that make it “Bucking Bull Tough”!  Wayne Hodges is now the official trailer sponsor of the United Bucking Bulls, Inc and presenter of the Wayne Hodges 4 Star Trailer Futurity Super Series.

Congratulations to this year’s UBBI Top Hand Award recipients!

With 100 of the best three and four year old UBBI bulls in the contest, the bull riding at the UBBI National Finals was as exciting as it could be.  Fifty bull riding cowboys brought their talent to town.  They consisted of the best 20 Don Gay Tour Bull Riding contestants and the best 30 CBR Horizon bull riding contestants.  With $40,000 in added money and a new Dodge pick-up from Truckville up for grabs, the competition was tough.

Josh Barrentine, who was the leader of the Don Gay Bull Riding Tour, won the first two rounds with scores of 88.25 and 88.5 points and earned $8640.  In the third and final round, it was Cole Mewbern winning with an 88.75 point score on Geronimo from Lufkin Ranch & Rodeo and K & K Cattle.  Mewbern earned $4320.  Ronny Kitchens won the average by riding 3 bulls for 256 points.  He won 6th place in the first two rounds and 3rd in the third and final round and pocketed $3660 and the keys to the new Dodge pick-up from Truckville.

Josh Barrentine won a total of $9120 at the finals and also won the Don Gay Bull Riding Tour Championship with over $16,000 in total earnings.  Cody White was unable to put any points on the board, but was able to win the CBR Horizon Series Championship.

A great finals for all with over $220,000 in prize money and almost 60 Tres Rios Silver Buckles were awarded to bucking bull owners and bull riders.  A thank you from the UBBI to all of our sponsors including Wayne Hodges 4 Star Trailers, Pro Bull Nutrition, Tres Rios Silver Buckles, Truckville, Richards Ranch & Rodeo and TwoBulls Supplements.  Congratulations to everyone and good luck in 2012!

The United Bucking Bulls, Inc celebrated it’s inaugural season by crowning UBBI World Champions in the Futurity, Derby and Classic divisions.  The 2011 UBBI Futurity World Champion was #902 I’ll Make You Rich owned by Kash Cattle Co, Porter Bucking Bulls and John Vinchot.  Make you rich is what he did by winning the single go-round Finals competition and earning $10,000.  Together with his regular season earnings, I’ll Make You Rich gathered a total of $14,562 to overtake B&S 724 (Bridges & Smith) in the World Title race.  By winning the UBBI National Finals, he was also awarded a $10,000 Finals Champion bonus (not counting toward world standings) and with UBBI Futurity Super Series cash, his grand total for the 2011 season was over $28,000!

In the Derby World Title race, it was another come from behind story with Super Cool Cat from Holmes, Terrell and Baker earning the crown.  Super Cool Cat placed 2nd in the first round with a score of 89 points behind Black Betty from Paul Daniels and Lori Barber.  In the Championship round on Saturday night, Super Cool Cat posted another 89 point score and with a total score of 177.25 points, edged out Black Betty by only a quarter point to win the National Finals average title and $10,000.  With $10,000 added to his regular season earnings of $6318, a total of $16,318 was enough to earn the 2011 UBBI Derby World Championship.

The race for the world title in the Classic division was a nail bitter for all involved.  Geronimo had a tremendous season winning 5 of 8 regular season events, and came in as the season leader with $16,948.  On Friday night, Roy Carter’s #7S3 Pants on the Ground posted a score of 89.5 points for the round win, while Geronimo finished 5th in the round with a score of 87.25 points.  In the Championship round, it was Shakey Waters from Show Sports/Jane Clark with a score of 89 points.  Geronimo finished 7th and picked up a check for $4,500 in the average to hold on with a total of $21,449 and the gold buckle.

Congratulations to all the winners and a thank you from the UBBI to everyone for making 2011 a GREAT year?
