UBBI Season Winding Down With Two More Regular Season Events

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The 2011 UBBI National Finals is just around the corner.  This year’s crowning event will be held in Winnie, Texas at the Nutty Jerry’s Entertainment Complex on October 13 – 15.  With only two events remaining on this season’s schedule, there’s still an opportunity for breeders to grab a Finals spot.

The final event in the Midwest Region will be held in Hillsboro, Wisconsin on September 4th.  This is a co-sanctioned event with the Midwest Bucking Bull Association and UBBI Northern Region members will receive Northern Region points at this event toward qualifying for the UBBI National Finals.  The last UBBI regular season event will be in Winnie, Texas on September 16 – 17.

Entries are now open for the FINAL event in Winnie until Tuesday, September 6th, because of the Labor Day Holiday.

UBBI National Finals qualifiers will be determined by money won.  The Top 50 Futurity, Derby and Classic bulls, based on money won, will compete at the UBBI National Finals.  The Top 30 bulls ranked Nationally and the Top 20 bulls ranked Regionally will qualify.  If a Regionally ranked bull is in the Top 30 National standings, that bull will qualify Nationally allowing the next available bull from that Region to move up and qualify.  After the Top 4 Regionally qualified bulls have been determined, if any Finals positions are available the next highest ranked bull Nationally will move up and qualify.

Chi’e Che’e Fly Sprouts Wings at the Cowboy Capital UBBI Event in Stephenville

Monday, August 29th, 2011

#960 Chi Chi's Fly owned by Kirk Johnson and Jeff Hubbard

The UBBI held it’s 29th event of the 2011 season this past weekend and it’s 2nd event of the year inside the 4c’s Arena & Event Center!  The Cowboy Capital UBBI Event attracted 71 Futurity, 58 Derby and 34 Classic Bulls and paid out $46,500 in prize money.  When the dust settled and everybody caught there breath in the 100+ degree heat, Chi’e Che’e Fly (Chee Chee Fly) flew away with the Futurity win and posted the highest marked futurity score this season with a whopping 90.25 points!  The bull is owned by Kirk Johnson and Jeff Hubbard and has competed at three other UBBI events.  Winnie in March, the Spring Spectacular in April and the Summer Spectacular in August.  Chi’e Che’e Fly won $607 in March at Winnie, but since then has had bad luck at the other two events until now.

“He tries so hard sometimes he stumbles or he turns back so quick he hits his head on the gate post,” shared Kirk Johnson.  “Dean Wilson has done a tremendous job with him and he’s been patient and it’s paid off!”

Although Kirk and Jeff own the bull, they’ve trusted Dean Wilson to take care of, haul and flank their pride and joy since January of this year.  With a total of $3,760 in UBBI cash, Chi’e Che’e Fly is now among the top 20 bulls in the UBBI standings and will likely qualify for the UBBI National Finals in October.

Other top futurity bulls at the Cowboy Capital UBBI Event included City Lights aka Red Man of Carl Wilburn’s in 2nd, Greg Talbert’s Mud Packer in 3rd, and I’ll Make You Rich of Kash Cattle/Porter Bulls and Cut Leg of Kevin Pool’s splitting 3rd and 4th place.

In the Derby, Joy Hawks brought the Bad Apple from Walker Bucking Stock Breeders and won 1st place with a score of 90 points to win $3,471.  Geronimo from Lufkin Ranch & Rodeo continued his winning ways with a score of 90.5 points to pick of a check for $2,570.

United Bucking Bulls, Inc to Host Educational Seminar

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Due to recent developments within the bucking bull competition industry regarding the suspected use of drugs, substances and other agents believed to enhance the performance of bucking bulls, the United Bucking Bulls, Inc is taking an aggressive proactive stance to educate it’s members and others interested in bucking bull competitions.

“Since the start of the 2011 season, the UBBI has had a testing policy and a misconduct and cheating policy in it’s rule book,” stated Randy Schmutz, the general manager of the UBBI.  “We want to assure those who choose to participate at UBBI events that the use of these substances will not be tolerated by the UBBI.  But more than that, we want to educate our members on the science and the legalities concerning the use of these substances as well!”

The issues regarding the alleged use of these drugs has led the UBBI to organize and host a “mini” Educational Seminar this weekend during the Cowboy Capital UBBI Event to be held at the 4c’s Arena & Event Center in Stephenville, Texas.  The seminar will be conducted by Dr. Dwight Wolfe, DVM and Dr. Gary Warner, DVM.

Dr. Wolfe is a food animal professor at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.  After graduating from the University of Tennessee, he obtained his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Auburn in 1977 and his M.S. in Large Animal Surgery and Medicine in 1982.  He became a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in 1983 and is one of only four diplomates who have served as president of both the American College of Theriogenologists and the Society for Theriogenology.  Named Alabama Veterinarian of the Year in 2004, he was inducted into the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame in 2006.  In 2009 the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association presented Dr. Wolfe the Distinguished Service Award, the association’s highest honor.  At Auburn University he received the College of Veterinary Medicine Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2010 and the D.F. Wolfe Teaching Hospital Barn is dedicated in his name.

Dr. Warner joined Elgin Veterinary Hospital, Inc. in 1980 as an Associate Veterinarian after graduating from Louisiana State University, School of Veterinary Medicine. In 1983, Dr. Warner became a partner in the practice and is currently it’s Bovine/Food Animal practicing partner.  Dr. Warner is world renown in the Bovine industry for his veterinary expertise and vast experience in treating bucking bulls and livestock.  He has been instrumental in the advancement of treatment in bucking bull injuries.

“These men are leaders in veterinary medicine and are very familiar with the issues that face our industry concerning the use of anabolic steroids and other substances alleged being used in bucking bulls,” stated Randy Schmutz.  “Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Warner are going to share with those in attendance a description and the effects of these drugs, the legalities and the remedial uses as well.  Most importantly, they want to help us come up with a plan to rid our industry of the illegal and non-label use of these drugs!”

This “mini” seminar is open to everyone who’s interested in learning more about this issue.  The United Bucking Bulls, Inc invites everyone to attend at 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 27th at the 4c’s Arena & Event Center on FM 205 in Stephenville, Texas.  Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
